This trip was took place during the last weekend of April 2022. A long almost three hour drive down there on a rainy Friday night, we set up camp at Wilaby Campground. At this point raining hard and it being pitch black (we showed up right past twilight, about 9 pm), we set up the camper. This was a non hookup site, so we filled our water tank and flip on the water pump, and is completely dead. With diagnosis after we got home we did narrow it down to the motor being bad on the pump. Wilaby Campground is a forest service campground, being in the National Forest and not the National Park. I have not driven up to it, but I am pretty sure the national park starts on the north end of the lake.
We did a few hikes, one along the lakeshore up past the Lake Quinault Lodge and up to North Fork Campground (also Forest Service), and around a “rainforest” loop with some signage about plant life and such. Sunday morning comes along and we are packing up to leave, and realize we did not unplug the truck from the camper. We just fixed the fifth wheel plug before this trip to be correctly wired, as before it didn’t work right and wouldn’t charge the camper battery. The truck was dead and had to get a jumpstart to get home.
This is definitely a trip we will make again. The campground is well kept, quiet, and the campsites are well spaced together and pretty private. One thing to note though is that the “lakefront” sites are not necessarily lakefront. There is some high bank that prevents you from going straight from your campsite to the lake. Sites closer to the day use are a lot lower and you may be able to go in-between easily without going to the day use but not others around the campground.
