This was a long day trip I have been wanting to do for a few summers. In a single day I managed to visit all three Forts out around Port Townsend, WA. I made it to Fort Flagler, Fort Worden, and Fort Casey, along with being able to visit the vintage aircraft museum at the Port Townsend Airport. I knew that during winter there would not be enough daylight hours to get it done, and in the previous couple of summers I have simply not taken the time to make the thought of this trip a reality.
I started the day early, leaving the house at about 6 AM to make it onto the 7:30 AM ferry over to Widbey Island and Fort Casey. I walked on since the state park is right next door to the ferry terminal and can see from my pictures from when I stayed here years ago that the ferry docks right next to the campground here. I spent about an hour and a half here. enough time for the boat to go back to Port Townsend and back. I got back onboard and made it back over to town.
My next stop was Fort Warden. I hiked the main gun line here and after taking a break and eating some lunch, I left town and headed over to the Port Townsend Airport and the Port Townsend Vintage Aero Museum. I so happened to see the museum on Google Maps a couple days prior and decided that if I had time on this trip I would stop by. As it was only mid afternoon on my way out to Fort Flagler, I decided to stop by. This is a cool museum that I spent about an hour and a half at looking at the aircraft and other memorabilia stored here. All the aircraft have been restored by their maintenance shop next door, and all on the ground level are flight worthy.
Finally, I made it out to Fort Flagler. I again hiked the main bunker line here along with stopping by Battery Henry Bankhead. Only place I did not stop is the spotlight in the south corner of the park as you pull in to the left down the trail. It does exist but is a hike down, and there was construction going on with the parking area and trail that makes it the most convenient to get out to it. After my hike here was complete, I made my way home leaving Port Townsend about 7 PM, about 12 hours after I started my day up there.
