This was a Labor Day weekend trip to Astoria Oregon area. I was in Portland, Oregon on Saturday for a NASCAR race, so I decided to take Sunday and drive out to Astoria. It was a little similar to my trip earlier in the summer to the Triangle of Fire, in that I visited Fort Stevens State Park, which part of the park is an old military base, Fort Columbia State Park, which is a supporting base to Fort Stevens, along with Cape Disappointment State Park. Both Cape Disappointment and Fort Columbia are on the Washington side, and Fort Stevens is on the Oregon side of the Columbia River.
Fort Stevens interestingly enough is the only Coastal armament that I am aware of that had action during World War 2. There was a Japanese submarine that let some incendiary bombs out to blow up some planted bombs in the river to keep enemy boats out along with destroying nearby towns and the military bases. The plan was foiled though, Fort Stevens, unlike the Triangle of Fire bases, still had active guns and fired back, and the Japanese submarine left.
