This was a six mile round trip hike out on Mount Walker near Quilcene, Washington. It is the only Puget Sound facing mountain peak where you can either hike or drive to the summit at 2,803 feet. During the winter, November 1st through March 31st, the forest service road is closed but you can still hike to the top.
The road is about 4 miles, and the road is 2.5 miles from trailhead to the south viewpoint. The north viewpoint you can see towards Port Townsend, Vancouver Island, and Mount Baker. At the south viewpoint, you can see Mount Rainier, the Kitsap peninsula, and the City of Seattle on a clear day.
This trip, I hiked up the road and back down on the trail. If I were to do it this way again, I would take the trail up and road down, since the trail is 10-20 percent grades and the road is more gradual. Taking the gradual way back down is a lot easier on your legs than taking the trail. During the summer if you take the road you will be competing against car traffic on a one lane gravel road.
