This trip was over Thanksgiving Weekend 2022. We went to Cape Disappointment State Park, on the Long Beach Peninsula of Washington, located about 10 minutes outside of Illwaco, Washington, half hour out of Astoria, Oregon, and about hour and a half out of Portland, Oregon. We enjoyed staying here, and would come again. Only downside is the three hour drive from home and the spotty cell service.
There is a lot to look at here. Two lighthouses, Fort Canby, an old military base that protected the Columbia River just like the Triangle of Fire did by Port Townsend, Washington, a decent amount of beach and jetty, interpretive center and miles of hiking trails. Perfect place to stay at for a long weekend.
Campground area has no cell service, so keep that in mind. They did have a seemingly working emergency phone though. About half the spaces are closed in winter due to either having no hookups or are close to the beach and are potential for not being campsites the following spring due to erosion. Pay attention when booking as the later are not bookable till April 1st for the summer season.
